Gardens of Italy

(9 Days - Departs Daily on a Private Basis)
Rome, Florence, Tuscany

If you love gardens and you love Italy, this in-depth luxury tour is for you. It features private touring of and special access to many of Italy’s most beautiful and historically significant gardens. Also enjoy private cultural touring in Rome, Florence and Tuscany, and accommodation at exquisite luxury hotels renowned for their gardens.

The tour includes a wide range of gardens: ancient Roman ruins, masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque garden design, the finest gardens of the 20th century, gardens that have been recently restored or rediscovered, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Learn how each garden relates to its cultural context, such as the status of the property owner, and its physical context, such as the villa and surrounding landscapes. See a full range of Italian garden elements, including garden rooms, terraces, parterres, fountains, watercourses, grottoes, sculpture, special plantings and more, and learn how these elements were used to create dramatic, ornamental, narrative and symbolic effects.

Begin in Rome and enjoy private touring of the city’s most renowned gardens and green spaces, including several where religion, power and nature intersect in beautiful, complex ways. Also, tour cultural highlights such as the Roman and Imperial Forums, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Aventine Hill. One day, take a private excursion to Tivoli to see two spectacular villas: Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana), the elaborate country retreat of a Roman emperor, and Villa d’Este, whose fountains, waterfalls, grottoes and hydraulic organ made it one of the first “gardens of wonders.”

Next, transfer by private car through Tuscany. En route, stop at a renowned Renaissance villa in the Chianti region, and learn about the lifestyle of the aristocrats who once lived there during a private tour of the gardens, olive groves, vineyards and restored villa interior. Also, tour celebrated hill towns such as Siena and San Gimignano, and walk down medieval alleys, admire palazzi and ancient towers, and browse for olive oil, wine, cheese, baskets and ceramics.

Continue to Florence, and stay four nights at the exquisite Villa San Michele, a luxurious converted monastery on a hillside overlooking the city, or at the Four Seasons Florence, located in the city overlooking beautiful gardens. During private garden touring, visit renowned gardens in Florence, and take a full-day excursion to several private gardens, including an important garden from the early 20th century, a historically significant terraced garden with views over Florence, and one of the most highly regarded villa gardens in the city. Also, enjoy flexible private cultural touring in Florence according to your interests. You might like to visit the world-renowned Uffizi. Perhaps explore the market squares, antiques districts and artisan workshops of the Oltrarno district. Learn about Tuscan cuisine at specialty food shops and the wonderful Mercato Centrale. During free time, enjoy leisurely meals, strolls along the Arno River and shopping for Florentine gold jewelry, handmade paper, leather goods, antiques and housewares.

Next, transfer by private car to La Posta Vecchia, an elegant villa-style hotel—and the former home of J. Paul Getty—on the coast outside Rome. En route, tour two remarkable and very special gardens: a unique garden of fantasies and an elaborate Renaissance garden that’s one of the most beautiful in Italy. On your final night, enjoy La Posta Vecchia’s excellent restaurant, explore the hotel museum, which contains the ruins of an ancient Roman villa that remains under the property, or relax in the expansive seaside gardens—the perfect end to this wonderful tour.

This tour can be fully customized to include additional or alternative gardens or destinations throughout Italy.
