Food & Wine Tour of Italy

(11 Days - Departs Daily on a Private Basis)
Piedmont, Bologna & Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany & Florence

This tour focuses on the superb food and wine of northern Italy, uncovering how geography and history have influenced regional variation. Experience the best of the many local specialties through wine tastings, market visits, cooking classes and culinary touring.

Begin in the Piedmont region. The birthplace of the Slow Food movement, Piedmont is famous for fantastic cuisine and acclaimed red wines such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Barbaresco. Spend two nights at a luxury hotel located in a former monastery. Set among Piedmont’s picturesque vineyards, the hotel is also renowned for its gourmet restaurant and spa. During private touring, sample wines at the area’s finest wineries, and visit local villages such as Barolo, La Morra and Castiglione Falletto. Also visit the beautiful market town of Alba, home of the prized white truffle. You may wish to plan your tour to coincide with the Alba International Truffle Fair, which takes place from around mid-October to mid-November each year. One day, also enjoy a private truffle hunting excursion in the forested hills. A highlight of your stay in Piedmont will be having the opportunity to try regional specialties such as vitello tonnato (veal with tuna sauce), agnolotti (a delicate, filled pasta) and gianduja (chocolate with hazelnuts).

Continue to Emilia-Romagna, perhaps the best-known gastronomic region in Italy. Stay two nights in Bologna, one of Italy’s great epicurean capitals. During private culinary touring, visit Bologna’s renowned markets, and tour the city’s cultural highlights, such as grand churches, interesting museums and frescoed porticoes. One day, take a private culinary excursion to nearby Parma and Modena to visit producers of the region’s celebrated Parmesan cheese, prosciutto and balsamic vinegar.

Continue to Tuscany, a region synonymous with enchanting landscapes, superlative art, fine wine and delicious cuisine. Stay at an exclusive luxury resort (with its own renowned winery) for three nights. Enjoy private food and wine touring in nearby Tuscan towns such as Pienza and Montalcino, and visit renowned local wineries and food producers. During free time at the resort, additional activities can be arranged, such as truffle hunting, a private tour and tasting at the resort's winery, a Tuscan cooking class, guided nature walks and more.

Next, enjoy private touring of the cultural highlights of Siena and also visit the Antinori wine estate en route to Florence for three nights. During private city touring, visit the best local food markets, beautiful squares and museums, and specialty food shops selling Italian terracotta cookware, serving dishes and other items. One day, enjoy a private, chef-led market tour and cooking class to learn to prepare regional specialties. Another day, opt for a half-day private excursion to top wine estates in the Bolgheri wine region, the home of Super Tuscans. There will also be ample free time to enjoy the restaurants, shops, museums and other highlights of Florence independently.
