This tour explores the rich culture, diverse cuisine and spectacular landscapes of Yunnan Province, a region in southwestern China where Chinese, Tibetans, Laotians, Burmese, Vietnamese, Indians and hill tribe minorities converge. In recent years the region’s roads, hotels and other infrastructure have markedly improved, making Yunnan one of China’s most enticing destinations.
Begin in Kunming, a pleasant lakeside city below high peaks. Tour the Old City, the University District and the Bird & Flower Market. Continue north to Dali and Lijiang to visit hill tribe markets, villages and temples, and to attend a traditional Naxi music performance. Visit Tiger Leaping Gorge, a deep canyon channeling the headwaters of the Yangtze River, en route to Zhongdian, a high mountain town on the Tibetan border. Explore the rugged hills, the Songzanlin Monastery and the surrounding Tibetan community before flying back to Kunming.
