Art & Architecture Are Perfect Wine Pairings

Some of the world’s best wineries are also great destinations for travelers interested in contemporary art and architecture.

Artisans of Leisure can customize private tours around the world that include unique wine and design destinations. As part of our tours, we can arrange activities such as exclusive tastings at renowned wineries, memorable meals with wine pairings, expert-led art and architecture tours and stays at incredible luxury hotels.

A few of our favorite destinations for wine, architecture and art include:

Marques de Riscal and Bodegas Ysios in La Rioja, Spain

The Rioja and Ribera del Duero wine regions in Spain are known for bold Tempranillo wines and equally bold wineries designed by internationally acclaimed architects, including Bodegas Ysios by Santiago Calatrava (top), the Marques de Riscal winery hotel by Frank Gehry (above), the Bodegas Lopez de Heredia wine pavilion by Zaha Hadid, and Bodegas Faustino and Bodegas Portia by Foster + Partners.

Our private tours feature tastings at prestigious wine estates with cutting-edge design, visits to local markets, tours of historic villages, private gastronomic cooking classes in San Sebastian and tours of the Guggenheim Bilbao.

Chateau La Coste in Provence, France

Chateau La Coste is a unique destination in Provence, France, where art, architecture and wine converge. The estate features installations by artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Serra and Daniel Buren (above), as well as structures designed by architects Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry and Jean Nouvel. We arrange private Provence tours that include wine tasting at Chateau La Coste, time to explore the estate’s art installations, and, for interested travelers, stays at Villa La Coste, the five-star hotel on the property.

Elsewhere in France, we can arrange touring at wineries where leading architects have added contemporary buildings to historic properties, such as Sou Fujimoto at Maison Ruinart in Champagne and Philippe Starck at Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion in Bordeaux.

Antinori nel Chianti Classico in Tuscany, Italy

Artisans of Leisure arranges private wine tours throughout Italy, including in regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont.

Among the highlights are a winery tour, wine tasting or meal at Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery, a spectacular building with a corkscrew-inspired staircase that’s tucked into vineyard-clad hills in Tuscany.

Other notable modern wineries around Tuscany that we can include in our private Italy tours are Rocca di Frassinello by Renzo Piano and Petra by Mario Botta.

Vik Chile in Millahue, Chile

In the Chilean wine country, one of our preferred destinations is Vik Chile—a hotel designed by Marcelo Daglio that contains a collection of artworks by Roberto Matta, Marcela Correa (above), and other Chilean and international artists—and the affiliated Vik Winery, which was designed by Smiljan Radic. Another option is Clos Apalta, an estate with a Relais & Chateaux hotel and a modern winery.

Our wine-focused tours in Chile include tastings at the best wineries in the Colchagua Valley, Casablanca Valley and other wine regions, as well as options for hiking, horseback riding and picnicking in the vineyards.

A unique wine and art destination in Argentina is Bodega Colome, a historic estate in the mountains of Salta Province with high-elevation Torrontes and Malbec vineyards and a museum dedicated to installations by artist James Turrell, including Penumbra (above).

Our private Argentina tours can also include time in Mendoza, a top wine region with great luxury hotels among the vineyards, such as The Vines Resort & Spa and Cavas Wine Lodge, and wineries with interesting art and architecture, including Alfa Crux (formerly O. Fournier), Bodegas Salentein, Zuccardi Valle de Uco and Catena Zapata.
