The Iconic Landscapes of Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) in China

One of the most iconic landscapes in China, Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its otherworldly beauty of dramatic granite peaks and ancient pine trees rising through a sea of mist.
For centuries, this ethereal landscape in Anhui Province has inspired poets, painters and philosophers, and it remains a compelling destination for travelers on our private China tours.

Accompanied by a private guide, travelers ascend Mount Huangshan by one of several cable cars that glide through misty forests to different sections of the massif.
At the top, a network of stone steps and pathways forms a circuit of hiking trails and scenic routes through drifting mists.

Restaurants, cafes and teahouses around the mountaintop area offer travelers refreshments with beautiful views. Although drones are often used today, many supplies are still carried up the mountain’s ancient stone steps by porters as they have been for centuries.

We take travelers to scenic viewpoints where shifting light and weather reveal panoramas evocative of traditional Chinese ink-wash paintings.
The landscape of granite spires, mist-filled valleys, cascading waterfalls and ancient pines profoundly influenced the shanshui (“mountain and water”) genre of Chinese landscape painting.

During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties in the 16th and 17th centuries, painters frequently depicted the surreal mountains in ink-wash paintings and woodblock prints, cementing Mount Huangshan as the archetypal Chinese mountain landscape in both art and the cultural imagination.

We also take travelers to tour the Huangshan region’s cultural highlights, including ancient rural villages such as Hongcun and Xidi.

These UNESCO-listed villages are renowned for their rich cultural heritage, well-preserved Ming- and Qing-era architecture and narrow lanes lined with shops selling traditional crafts and local specialties.

Travelers can also visit studios where artisans continue Huizhou traditions such as wood carving, ink painting, paper making and bamboo or stone craftsmanship.

Hongcun Village, established in the 12th century, is notable for its sophisticated water system. Water flows through the town from two large ponds that connect to streams and canals, with water channels passing by most households.

Whitewashed courtyard homes with black-tile roofs, elegant interiors and intricate wood and stone carvings offer a glimpse into the refined lifestyle of prosperous Huizhou merchants.

Film enthusiasts might recognize Hongcun Village as a filming location for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).

In the city of Huangshan, Tunxi Ancient Street is a favorite stop for its vibrant atmosphere and beautifully preserved historic buildings filled with shops, galleries and teahouses.

The street is also known for its traditional craft workshops and boutiques selling local products such as calligraphy ink, handmade brushes and tea, as well as celadon ceramics historically produced in neighboring Zhejiang Province.

Time in Huangshan combines well with private touring in Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin and other favorite destinations in China.
