Nativity Scenes: A Craft Tradition in Southern Italy

Neapolitan nativity scenesAcross southern Italy, the centuries-old tradition of elaborate presepi (nativity scenes) is a distinctive and enduring expression of the region’s artistic heritage and devotional culture.

Among the most renowned examples are the lavish and theatrical tableaux from Naples, which depict an entire cross section of Neapolitan life alongside familiar biblical characters.

Neapolitan nativity scenesOriginating in Naples during the late Middle Ages and reaching its height in the 18th century, Neapolitan presepi are intricate miniature worlds featuring the Holy Family surrounded by the rhythms of daily life in and around Naples.

Shepherds, street vendors, musicians and aristocrats animate pastoral scenes and bustling town squares through vignettes of markets, taverns and festive gatherings.

In the 18th century, the Bourbon court and aristocratic families embraced the presepe as a fashionable symbol of refinement and piety, commissioning master craftsmen to create increasingly theatrical and detailed compositions.

This flourishing coincided with the rise of theater and opera in Naples, particularly after the founding of Teatro di San Carlo in 1737, the oldest continuously operating opera house in the world, a connection that scholars suggest helped shape the dramatic staging and lifelike qualities of presepi.

Workshops in Naples became renowned for lifelike terracotta figures with expressive faces, hand-painted details and costumes made from silk, velvet and embroidered textiles. Artisans also created scenic backdrops resembling theatrical sets and tiny props to bring each vignette to life.

Modern nativities have expanded to include contemporary characters and professions, and some intricate sets feature lights and running water.

Today Neapolitan nativities are displayed in major museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid.

We take travelers on our private Italy tours to shop for high-quality pieces and to visit renowned workshops in Naples as well as in Puglia and Sicily, where nativity displays incorporate local characters and traditional architecture but tend to offer a more serene, devotional counterpoint to the theatrical urban narratives and subtle social satire of Naples.

There are renowned artists located throughout Italy, including Lecce in Puglia and Palermo in Sicily.
