We’ve just returned from an incredible Artisans of Leisure private tour of Egypt, a bucket-list destination that truly delivers. Highlights included Cairo, the Pyramids, Abu Simbel, and a luxury Nile River cruise with stops in Luxor, the Valley of the Kings and Aswan.

Aswan, a city along the Nile River in southern Egypt, was one of our favorite places in the country. We particularly liked our luxurious suite at the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan, a legendary hotel with an evocative atmosphere and stunning views of the river and the desert.

Our private excursion to Abu Simbel was amazing. Its majestic temples, picturesque setting on the edge of Lake Nasser and unbelievable history made it a compelling and memorable destination.

Cruising the Nile River was a relaxing way to travel and offered glimpses of daily life in rural Egypt. Our own private Egyptologist guide and driver met us at each stop along the river, allowing us to explore the sites at our own pace, including the remarkable temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor and the beautifully decorated tombs in the Valley of the Kings and Deir el-Medina.

We also spent time in Cairo, a city with incomparable energy and dense layers of cultural attractions, especially in the Old City and Islamic Cairo.

We visited the new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) during its pre-opening phase to admire the impressive architecture and tour the modern, well-lit galleries, which tell the story of ancient Egypt through beautifully displayed artifacts.
