Pitzhanger Manor: Sir John Soane’s Country Home near London

With spectacular neoclassical architecture, exquisite interiors and contemporary art exhibitions, Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery is one of our favorite house museums in London, England. This lesser-known gem, formerly the country house of Sir John Soane, offers a glimpse into Georgian design and the private world of one of Britain’s most influential architects.

Surrounded by landscaped gardens in what was then a small village on the outskirts of west London, Pitzhanger Manor was acquired by Soane in 1800. He demolished the existing house (except for one wing designed by his mentor George Dance the Younger) and created a country retreat where he could entertain friends and clients, experiment with architectural ideas and showcase his collection of art and antiques.

Completed in 1804, the house is a striking example of the design principles seen in Soane’s later projects, such as the Bank of England and Dulwich Picture Gallery. The interiors reflect his fascination with classical antiquity and spatial illusion, incorporating domed ceilings, trompe l’oeil paintings, inset mirrors, abundant natural light and bold color schemes that feel surprising within the restrained classical framework.

One of our favorite rooms is the Upper Drawing Room.

Located in the original George Dance wing, it features exquisitely detailed Wedgwood-style plasterwork on the ceilings and hand-painted chinoiserie wallpaper, an intriguing contrast to Soane’s pared-down neoclassical aesthetic.

Also in the George Dance wing is the beautiful Eating Room, which has large windows and ornate plasterwork ceilings.

Other spaces include the vibrant Entrance Hall and the Breakfast Room, with its Greek key pattern around the fireplace and painted trompe l’oeil sky.

Just off the Breakfast Room is the Library, which features a ceiling painted to resemble the sky and tree branches; and the Small Drawing Room, with vivid red walls that were likely chosen by Soane to highlight his art collection.

The facade of Pitzhanger Manor was inspired by the Arch of Constantine, the fourth-century AD triumphal arch in Rome that Soane admired during his travels in Italy in the late 1770s. While the original arch commemorated the military victories of the Roman emperor Constantine, Soane may have intended his exterior design to convey both his classical ideals as well as a similar sense of personal achievement to his guests.

In addition to the restored historic rooms, the adjoining contemporary gallery hosts rotating exhibitions by leading artists and cultural events, creating a compelling juxtaposition with Soane’s designs.
