Tokyo, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, and Hakone

This tour combines Japan's main destinations of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hakone with two more remote regions (Takayama and Kanazawa) that showcase Japan's countryside, rural farmhouses, samurai districts, and craft production.

Tokyo and Takayama
  • Begin with a memorable stay at Tokyo's stunning new Four Seasons Marunouchi, an intimate luxury hotel ideally situated in Tokyo's Ginza district. 

  • Private city touring in Tokyo visits neighborhoods known for their unique shops, galleries, restaurants, architecture and important temples and shrines.
  • Travel inland via train to Takayama, a mountain hamlet nestled in the Japanese Alps. Explore the morning market and the many folk craft museums, specialty food shops, and traditional thatched roof farmhouses in town.
  • Dine on a mountain cuisine and take in stunning views.

Kanazawa and Noto Peninsula

  • Continue via train to Kanazawa, a wealthy feudal town known for its samurai district and production of lacquerware and silk.
  • Take a private excursion along the Noto Peninsula to visit small towns and villages renowned for lacquerware production.

  • Visit a private home in Wajima to view its beautiful traditional architecture, lacquered walls, tea rooms, and rooms adorned with Japanese antiques and folk art.
Kyoto and Hakone
  • Continue to Kyoto, where you'll have access to the city's most elegant gardens, imperial villas, temples and shrines.
  • Journey through local specialty shops and food markets, restaurants, and picturesque residential districts.
  • Next, take the bullet train to Hakone and Mt. Fuji, and spend a night spent enjoying the hot springs and kaiseki at the luxurious Gora Kadan Ryokan.
  • Depart Japan after one last night in Tokyo.

Day 01 Tokyo
Arrival transfer to Four Seasons Marunouchi for 2 nights.
 
Day 02 Tokyo
Full-day private tour of Tokyo's main landmarks and most interesting neighborhoods. (B)
 
Day 03 Tokyo - Takayama
Trains to mountain town of Takayama for 2 nights at ryokan. Kaiseki dinner at ryokan. (B,D)
 
Day 04 Takayama
Half-day private walking tour in town of markets, folk craft museums, specialty shops, traditional farmhouses. Afternoon at leisure. Kaiseki dinner at ryokan. (B,D)
 
Day 05 Takayama - Kanazawa
Train to Kanazawa for 2 nights. Afternoon touring in Kanazawa of gardens, samurai district, temples, museums, and lacquerware shops. (B)
 
Day 06 Wajima & Noto Peninsula Excursion
Visit morning market then depart on private excursion along coast to visit small towns, important temples and shrines, and small seaside villages. (B)
 
Day 07 Kanazawa - Kyoto
Train to Kyoto to Westin Miyako for 3 nights. Afternoon private touring in Kyoto to several temples, gardens, and Gion District. (B)
 
Day 08 Kyoto
Private tour in Kyoto, including Katsura Villa, Arashiyama, private gardens, local markets, favorite temples and shrines, specialty shops. (B,L)
 
Day 09 Kyoto
At leisure in Kyoto. Optional excursion to Miho Museum or Nara, upon request. (B)
 
Day 10 Kyoto - Hakone
First-class bullet train to Hakone for touring of Mt. Fuji and Open Air Museum in Hakone. Overnight at Gora Kadan Ryokan. Dinner at ryokan. (B,D)
 
Day 11 Hakone - Tokyo
Transfer to Tokyo's Four Seasons Marunouchi for overnight. (B)
 
Day 12 Depart Japan
