Rajasthan and Jaipur

  • Take in the culture of Rajasthan, best known for its regal families (Maharajas) who created hundreds of forts, palaces, gardens, temples, and havelis (mansions with courtyard interiors).

  • Explore this region that, until 1956, comprised 22 independent states ruled by upper-caste Hindu warrior princes.

  • Tour the artistic contributions -- including dance, music, and beautiful crafts -- made by numerous semi-nomadic indigenous tribes, which heighten the region's rich folk traditions.

  • Experience memorable, colorful imagery, such as Rajasthani men's turbans and women's tribal outfits, which boldly stand out against the desert backdrop.

  • In Jaipur, take an elephant ride to the forts, and attend an evening Arti ceremony at a local temple.

  • Explore the medieval backstreets filled with artisans' shops that specialize in textiles, leatherwork, woodblock prints, tribal accessories, perfumes, jewelry, household goods, and Jaipur's traditional blue pottery.
